Rosebud holds a firm grip on the local imagination. The unique flora and fauna, the massive, old trees, and it’s unparalleled beauty have always drawn people to its slopes. For the better part of the past century Rosebud has been the summer rangeland to the local ranching community, the location of many community Boxing Day Celebrations, baseball games, sleigh rides, cattle drives, picnics, hunting camps, hikes, cross-country skiing outings, and many other uses. It’s image remains firmly entrenched in the local identity.
It may not be unfair to say this unassuming hill has entered the cultural and spiritual heritage of the local community and beyond. Social exchange and interaction have historically threaded their way through this mysterious, cathedral-like highland. As today we must negotiate the winding curves of the Punchaw Road through the beautiful aspen and fir forests, old native trails followed this ridge from the thriving settlement on Punchaw Lake to the once-plentiful salmon run on the Upper Chilako. All those who pass through can’t help but share some kind of connection with this place.
